Heatwave Alert Issued for Pakistan
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for a forthcoming heatwave, anticipating a sharp increase in temperatures nationwide from April 26 to 30. This is attributed to the development of a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere.
The weather pattern is predicted to form around April 26, extending its impact across most of the country by April 27, resulting in substantially higher daytime temperatures.
From April 26 to May 1, daytime temperatures in southern Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan are expected to be 5-7 °C higher than usual.
From April 27 to 30, the upper and central Punjab regions, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are forecast to experience temperatures 4-6 °C above the seasonal average.
Some respite is anticipated from May 1 onwards, as an incoming weather system may bring rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms to parts of Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, starting on April 30.
The public is strongly advised, particularly children, women, and older adults, to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours and maintain adequate hydration to prevent heatstroke and other heat-related ailments.
Farmers are encouraged to adjust their wheat harvesting schedules accordingly and implement necessary precautions to safeguard their livestock.
The rising temperatures in northern regions may also lead to a quicker rate of snow melting, especially between April 27 and May 1.
Citizens are encouraged to utilize water resources responsibly across all sectors. Additionally, strong winds, dust storms, and lightning could pose risks to infrastructure such as power lines, trees, vehicles, and solar panels around April 30 and May 1.
Authorities have been instructed to remain vigilant and implement all essential measures to minimize potential risks associated with the heatwave.
