Heatwave Alert Issued for Pakistan
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning about an impending heatwave, predicting a significant rise in temperatures nationwide from April 26 to 30. This is due to a high-pressure system forming in the upper atmosphere.
The weather pattern is anticipated to take hold on April 26, extending its reach across most of the country by April 27. This will result in substantially warmer daytime conditions.
From April 26 to May 1, daytime temperatures in southern Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan are expected to be 5-7 °C higher than usual.
In the upper and central Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan regions, temperatures are likely to be 4-6 °C above average between April 27 and 30.
Some relief is anticipated around May 1, as a new weather system could bring rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms to areas of Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, starting April 30.
The public is advised, especially children, women, and older adults, to avoid direct sun exposure and maintain adequate hydration to prevent heat-related ailments.
Farmers are encouraged to adjust their wheat harvesting plans and take protective measures for their livestock.
The increased temperatures in northern regions may accelerate snowmelt, particularly from April 27 to May 1.
Citizens are urged to use water responsibly in all sectors. Additionally, strong winds, dust storms, and lightning may pose risks to infrastructure such as power poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels on April 30 and May 1.
Authorities have been advised to remain vigilant and implement necessary precautions to reduce the risks associated with the heatwave.
