Heatwave Alert Issued for Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning regarding an impending heatwave. High temperatures are anticipated nationwide from April 26th to 30th, triggered by a high-pressure system forming in the upper atmosphere.

The weather pattern is projected to take shape around April 26th, extending its influence across much of the country by April 27th. This will likely result in a marked escalation in daytime temperatures.

From April 26th to May 1st, daytime temperatures in southern Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan are expected to exceed normal levels by 5-7 °C.

In the meantime, the upper regions of the country—including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan—will probably see temperatures climb to 4-6 °C above the seasonal average between April 27th and 30th.

Some respite is anticipated starting May 1st, as an incoming weather system might usher in rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms to areas of Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, commencing on April 30th.

The public is strongly encouraged, especially children, women, and older adults, to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the day and to maintain adequate hydration to minimize the risk of heat-related ailments.

Farmers should modify their wheat harvesting plans as needed and implement measures to shield their animals.

Elevated temperatures in the northern regions could potentially accelerate snowmelt, especially from April 27th to May 1st.

Citizens are strongly advised to use water cautiously in all activities. Furthermore, strong gusts, dust clouds, and electrical activity could endanger infrastructure like power poles, trees, automobiles, and solar panels on April 30th and May 1st.

Relevant authorities have received guidance to maintain vigilance and enact all required safety measures to mitigate the potential consequences of the heatwave.
