Hamilton to Honor Gilgeous-Alexander with Street Naming

Following a public gathering at Hamilton Stadium on Thursday, NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, after being presented with the key to the city by Mayor Andrea Horwath, proudly stated, “I’m from Hamilton.”

In further recognition, the city of Hamilton will dedicate a street in Gilgeous-Alexander’s honor, commemorating his outstanding season where he guided his team to the NBA title.

Addressing the attendees, the basketball sensation shared reflections on the impact of his hometown on his development.

He remarked, “While I was growing up, and as I journeyed around the globe — visiting numerous states, cities and countries — people invariably inquired about my origins. I always responded with pride, stating that I was from Hamilton.”

He further elaborated on the city’s distinctiveness.

“Hamilton possesses a character unlike any other city in Ontario. The people of Hamilton exhibit a unique sense of resilience, resolve, pride, and dynamism that sets them apart from the rest of the province, something I deeply identify with,” Gilgeous-Alexander added.

Expressing his sincere appreciation for the accolade, he conveyed, “I carry that spirit with me constantly, wherever I am. Therefore, you can understand the immense joy I felt upon learning that I would receive the key to the city I cherish and have a street named in my honor.”
