Journalist Killed in Ghotki Shooting
GHOTKI: Tufail Rind, the General Secretary of the Mirpur Mathelo Press Club, was fatally shot in Ghotki on Wednesday morning, according to law enforcement officials. This incident is being treated as a targeted assassination.
The police indicate that the event transpired near Masoo Wah on Jarwar Road, situated in the Mirpur Mathelo vicinity. Rind was accompanying his children to their school when unidentified individuals initiated gunfire directed at his motorcycle, resulting in his immediate demise.
The deceased journalist’s body was transported to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Mirpur Mathelo, where a forensic investigation is currently in progress.
A police representative stated that two individuals have been taken into custody concerning the homicide. The Ghotki SSP mentioned that preliminary investigations suggest the crime is connected to a real estate disagreement. The SSP guaranteed that all individuals implicated would be taken into custody shortly.
During the shooting, Rind’s eight-year-old niece, who was also present, was injured after falling from the motorcycle.
She received initial treatment at DHQ Hospital and was subsequently discharged. However, police later confirmed that she succumbed to trauma resulting from the incident.
The Chief Minister of Sindh, Murad Ali Shah, conveyed his profound sorrow regarding the journalist’s death. He asserted that assaults on journalists constitute an infringement upon press freedom.
The Chief Minister’s media contact stated that he has instructed the Inspector General of Sindh Police to provide a comprehensive report regarding the circumstances of the event.
In response to the killing, journalists organized a demonstration in front of the SSP office in Ghotki, calling for justice in the case.
