Cameron Green Details Dietary Management for Kidney Condition
Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has opened up about the dietary adjustments he makes to manage his chronic kidney disease, emphasizing the importance of ‘smart choices.’
Green, who publicly disclosed his condition in December 2023, has been sidelined since Australia’s tour of England in September 2023.
The 25-year-old has been recovering from a back injury that necessitated surgery, keeping him off the field since then.
However, Green is determined to rejoin the national team, fueled by an upcoming five-game stint in the County Championship with Gloucestershire.
In a recent discussion with a British media outlet, Green discussed his health challenges, the difficulties he encounters in his professional life, and his strategies for balancing his well-being and career.
“My kidney function won’t improve, but I can reduce further deterioration. It doesn’t prevent me from living fully—I simply need to be mindful of my decisions,” Green stated.
He added, “Maintaining a kidney-friendly diet is easier when I am at home. Finding suitable food while travelling for cricket is more challenging because of the extensive travel that it involves.”
“This is particularly difficult when playing cricket almost constantly for ten months annually in various countries.”
“Everyone faces unseen health challenges. For me, it involves making informed decisions daily to manage my condition effectively.”
Cameron Green also mentioned that he was assisted by a chef during his time in India for the Indian Premier League (IPL), who supported him in designing his diet, which he said has been effective.
“During the previous IPL season, I collaborated with a chef,” Green explained. “We developed a meal plan featuring four nutritious options, including spaghetti, chicken dishes, rice, and poke bowls. This approach was very beneficial.”
“Kidneys won’t heal on their own, but with the right care, their decline can be slowed. Consistent management should ensure it doesn’t negatively impact my career.”
