Pakistan Announces Revised Tariff Agreement with the United States
The government announced on Friday the successful conclusion of revised tariff negotiations with the United States, a move expected to bolster market access and foster trade growth for Pakistan.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, “The Government of Pakistan is pleased to share the successful outcome of tariff discussions held with the United States.”
The agreement establishes a tariff rate of 19% on Pakistani goods entering the U.S. market. This rate is significantly reduced from the initially proposed 29%.
The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s recent unveiling of new tariffs, potentially reaching up to 41%, on imports from numerous countries, including Pakistan. The President cited ongoing trade imbalances and a perceived lack of reciprocity as justification for the tariffs on Thursday.
The Ministry of Finance statement also noted: “This decision from U.S. authorities demonstrates a balanced and progressive outlook, maintaining Pakistan’s competitive edge compared to other nations in South and Southeast Asia. This tariff level is particularly beneficial for enhancing Pakistan’s export capabilities, notably in crucial sectors such as textiles, which are vital to the national export economy.”
The Finance Minister has stated they are maintaining close contact with relevant parties. The minister views the current tariff arrangement as a substantial chance to increase Pakistan’s presence in the U.S. market.
The statement urged, “It is now crucial for Pakistani exporters and trade organizations to implement a proactive and targeted marketing approach to fully leverage this development.”
The ministry emphasized potential for expansion beyond textiles. “The government is dedicated to assisting exporters through supportive policies, market insights, and initiatives to promote trade.”
The administration aims to further strengthen collaboration with the United States in areas including investment, artificial intelligence, digital currencies, mining, energy, and other innovative sectors.
In closing, the statement said, “Pakistan remains committed to working closely with President Trump and the U.S. administration to advance shared objectives of economic advancement and mutual prosperity.”
