Karachi Goods Transporters End Strike After Agreement with Commissioner

Goods transporters in Karachi declared the cessation of their strike on Saturday, subsequent to fruitful discussions with Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, according to reports.

The Karachi Commissioner has granted a six-month period for transporters to guarantee their vehicles’ roadworthiness.

The Transporters of Goods Association (TGA) had initiated the strike due to escalating disagreements with the Sindh government regarding vehicle certifications. This information was verified on Friday by a source within the Karachi Port Trust (KPT).

The strike action extended into its fourth day on Friday, raising concerns about the deterioration of perishable goods and mounting demurrage expenses, which are billed in US dollars on cargo.

On Saturday, productive conversations with the Karachi Commissioner resulted in the announcement to discontinue the strike.

During these discussions, an understanding was reached wherein transporters will progressively work towards ensuring their vehicles meet fitness standards, with a commitment to achieve full compliance across the fleet within the next six months—a key requirement put forth by the TGA.

Following the resolution of the strike, commercial operations at Karachi’s ports were restored on Saturday, clearing impediments to the import and export processes.
