Phillips Sidelined with Groin Injury, Recovery to Take ‘Weeks’

AUCKLAND: Glenn Phillips, the dynamic all-rounder, is set to miss both the ongoing T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe and the subsequent two-Test match series against the Chevrons. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on Friday that Phillips sustained a right groin injury.

The NZC indicated that Phillips’ injury occurred during the recent Major League Cricket (MLC) final.

Upon assessment in Zimbabwe, the injury was determined to require a recovery period spanning ‘a number of weeks’.

“Phillips sustained the injury during the Major League Cricket (MLC) final and was assessed upon arrival in Zimbabwe, where it became clear that he will need several weeks for rehabilitation,” NZC stated.

As a result, Tim Robinson, a top-order batsman initially included in the New Zealand squad for the tri-series to cover for players involved in the MLC 2025 final, will remain with the team.

New Zealand’s head coach, Rob Walter, voiced his dismay at losing Phillips for the Zimbabwe tour but expressed confidence in the all-rounder’s commitment to recovery.

“It’s obviously disappointing to be without someone of Glenn’s quality,” Walter commented.

“Much like Finn, we sympathize with Glenn that he’s missing this series.

“We know he was eager to play for the BLACKCAPS, and unfortunately, he won’t be able to do so in this series.

“We’re confident he will work diligently to return to the field, and I look forward to that moment.”

It is understood that Glenn Phillips will return to New Zealand together with James Neesham and Mitchell Hay, who were also brought in as cover players.

His replacement for the forthcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe will be revealed at a later time.
