Gauff Victorious Over Pegula in Wuhan Open Final
Coco Gauff lauded her bond with Jessica Pegula, recognizing their friendship as a significant win, after securing the Wuhan Open title against her fellow American competitor. Gauff concluded her standard season impressively, claiming a WTA 1000 title. In the final match, she triumphed over Pegula with scores of 6-4, 7-5, earning her first championship since her French Open victory earlier in the year.
Following a disappointing conclusion at the US Open, Gauff demonstrated remarkable form, advancing to the semifinals of the China Open before ultimately winning the Wuhan Open. Her path to victory included defeating opponents such as Laura Siegemund and Jasmine Paolini before her final face-off with Pegula.
During the presentation ceremony after the match, Gauff expressed her gratitude to Pegula, her former doubles partner of considerable duration, for her kindness when Gauff initially joined the tour. She also conveyed her anticipation for many more final matches between them in the future.
Gauff remarked, “When I first started on tour, you were among the first to extend warmth and welcome me. I deeply appreciate that gesture, it meant a lot. It’s wonderful to finally compete against you in the final, and I hope for numerous future encounters. Congratulations and thank you.”
Gauff has now improved her head-to-head record against Pegula to 3-4; previously, Pegula held a 4-1 advantage. With the Wuhan Open now complete, the WTA calendar only includes the WTA Finals, which is scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November.
Both Gauff and Pegula have already successfully qualified for the season-ending tournament.
