Sinner Advances to Face Gasquet in French Open Second Round

PARIS: Jannik Sinner showcased a commanding performance, defeating Arthur Rinderknech with a 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 victory in the opening round of the French Open at Court Philippe-Chatrier on Monday.

The Italian, who previously served a three-month suspension, displayed form reminiscent of his run to the Rome final earlier this month. Despite facing challenges from Rinderknech, Sinner maintained composure throughout the match.

Sinner initiated the match with an aggressive approach, effectively preventing Rinderknech from establishing a foothold. He sustained firm command from the match’s outset to its conclusion.

Following his victory, Sinner acknowledged the difficulties inherent in first-round matches but expressed satisfaction with his ability to manage the pressure, particularly during the third set.

He remarked on his prior encounters with Rinderknech, acknowledging him as a formidable player. Sinner stated, “First round matches are never easy, so I’m happy how I handled the situation coming back in the third set. We have played before and know each other well and he’s an amazing player.”

Looking ahead, Jannik Sinner commented on his upcoming match against French veteran Richard Gasquet, recognizing Gasquet’s contributions to the sport. He conveyed his anticipation for the opportunity to compete against him, adding, “He gave so much to our sport, he has given you all so much so I’m happy to share the court with him. I know you’re going to support him, so it’s OK.”
