Barcelona Aims to Register Key Players Amid Financial Constraints
Reports from international media suggest that Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick, is optimistic about registering crucial players before their La Liga season opener against Mallorca on Saturday.
The club faces challenges in registering players due to La Liga’s stringent financial regulations. These rules are in place because Barcelona’s spending on acquisitions and salaries has exceeded their revenue for several seasons.
Flick conveyed his dissatisfaction with the situation but remains hopeful that a resolution can be reached before their La Liga debut.
“You can imagine I’m not happy about that. But I know the situation and I believe in the club,” Flick stated. “We have to wait till tomorrow. It was the same situation last season. We will focus on what we can change and what is in our hands. The other things, I believe in the club.”
Barcelona’s recent signings, including Joan Garcia, Wojciech Szczesny, and Marcus Rashford, are yet to be officially registered.
The club has partially addressed the registration issue through internal adjustments involving captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Initially, the club requested Ter Stegen to take a long-term medical leave to clear a significant portion of his wages, ensuring compliance with LaLiga’s Financial Fair Play rules. However, he initially declined the agreement. After a period of being sidelined and briefly losing his captaincy, he eventually agreed to the terms, leading to his reinstatement as captain.
Hansi Flick commented on Ter Stegen’s situation, stating that discussions between the club and the player resolved the matter.
“I think the most important thing is that everyone speaks together. Marc and the club, they spoke,” Flick noted. “The most important thing for me, for Marc and the club is that he comes back. He’s shown for many years here that he’s a fantastic goalkeeper and the important thing is that he comes back and is ready to play. We’ll all help him, we’re all on his side.”
Furthermore, Inigo Martinez’s transfer to Al-Nassr has freed up considerable salary space, providing Barca with €14 million off the wage bill. Still, they need to decrease it to adhere to La Liga’s established limits.
Flick expressed conflicting feelings about losing Martinez, who was a key member of the central defense.
“I was a little bit surprised but I could totally understand him. I’m not happy that he left, he’s a fantastic player and has a great personality,” Flick said. “He was one of our leaders, he was outstanding not only as a player but also a personality in the dressing room. He deserves this and I wish him all the best.”
