Kosola’s 70th-Minute Goal Seals Victory for Finland
Katariina Kosola’s decisive strike propelled Finland to a 1-0 victory against Iceland, who played with 10 players, in their Women’s European Championship opening match on Wednesday. This win provides Finland with an ideal beginning in Group A, which also features Switzerland and Norway, the host nation.
In the previous tournament, Finland suffered defeats in all three of their matches, managing to score only once. However, following Hildur Antonsdottir of Iceland receiving a red card in the 58th minute, Kosola successfully broke through the defense twelve minutes later.
The first half concluded without any goals, with Iceland posing a threat through set-pieces and Sveindis Jonsdottir’s lengthy throw-ins. Meanwhile, Finland generated superior opportunities but encountered difficulty in surpassing goalkeeper Cecilia Runarsdottir.
Runarsdottir, who plays for Inter Milan and was recognized as the best Serie A keeper in the previous season, made an outstanding diving save to deny Kosola’s attempt from the edge of the penalty area. Iceland also faced a setback when captain Glodis Viggosdottir sustained an injury, leading to her substitution at halftime.
Another throw-in delivered by Jonsdottir presented Iceland with their first significant opportunity after the intermission. Finnish keeper Anna Koivunen saved one attempt, and Emma Koivisto blocked another shot, but it ultimately resulted in Antonsdottir’s red card.
Antonsdottir had previously received a booking six minutes earlier, and a reckless challenge off the ball resulted in a second yellow card, reducing Iceland’s team to 10 players with more than thirty minutes remaining in the game.
The rhythmic drumming of the Icelandic supporters resonated around the Arena Thun; however, it was Finland that dictated the pace on the field and rightfully discovered a path to scoring.
Kosola advanced the ball into the penalty area, cut inside, and unleashed a superb shot. Runarsdottir managed to get a hand to it but was unable to prevent the ball from finding the upper corner of the net.
Iceland exerted pressure until the end in pursuit of an equalizing goal, but Finland successfully defended their lead to secure the three points.
Switzerland and Norway are scheduled to compete later on Wednesday in Basel.
Finland will then face Norway in Sion on Sunday, while Iceland, who have only secured one victory in 14 Euros matches, will go up against the Swiss team in Bern.
