Gillespie Questions Aaqib Javed’s Role and Potential Impact on Mike Hesson’s Plans
Former Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie has voiced his concerns regarding the possible effect of newly appointed Director of High Performance Aaqib Javed on the coaching structure, specifically on white-ball head coach Mike Hesson’s strategies.
In a recent discussion with a local sports outlet, Gillespie was asked if Aaqib Javed’s involvement could potentially disrupt Mike Hesson’s intended plans.
“In short, I am uncertain about Mr. Javed’s precise role within the organization. Is he serving as a selector? Or is he primarily focused on the High Performance Centre? I currently don’t have answers to these specific questions,” Gillespie stated.
Upon learning that Javed’s official designation is Director of High Performance, Gillespie questioned, “Is he also a selector?” After being clarified that Javed’s responsibilities are confined to high performance, he remarked, “In that case, Mike should face no issues.”
The former Australian all-rounder spoke candidly about the challenges Mike Hesson might encounter in his new role as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, pointing to possible meddling as a significant obstacle.
“It is essentially interference from individuals who should not be involved. It is that simple,” Gillespie commented.
“Mike has been appointed as the head coach; he should be allowed to fulfill his duties. He should be trusted. Given that he will have his own coaching staff and players, he should be afforded the latitude to operate effectively with minimal disruption. I have faith that the Pakistan white-ball team can prosper under his leadership,” he added.
Notably, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Aaqib Javed’s appointment as Director of High Performance on May 13.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi verified the announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, describing it as a strategic initiative to reinforce Pakistan’s cricket framework.
“To bolster our cricket infrastructure, we are delighted to welcome Aqib Javed as the Director of High Performance. His appointment, along with Mike Hesson as the white-ball head coach, signifies a crucial advancement in our strategic vision for Pakistan cricket.
“Collectively, their proficiency and guidance will be instrumental in the advancement, progress, and triumph of our national structure.”
The 52-year-old was an important member of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning team and brings significant experience as both a player and coach. Previously, he acted as the interim head coach for the national team and has held several coaching positions at the domestic and franchise levels.
Javed is succeeding Nadeem Khan, who vacated the role earlier this year. His appointment occurs during a period of considerable transition for Pakistan cricket, marked by several high-profile changes within the coaching staff in recent months.
For context, Aaqib Javed played for Pakistan in 22 Test matches and 163 One-Day Internationals between 1988 and 1998.
