Fifth Test on a Knife’s Edge as England and India Battle for Supremacy
LONDON: The captivating Test series between England and India is heading towards a gripping conclusion as the fifth and deciding Test match approaches its final day, with the series result still uncertain.
England seemed to be in a commanding position while chasing a target of 374, propelled by superb centuries from Harry Brook and Joe Root.
However, Prasidh Krishna rekindled India’s chances by claiming two quick wickets in a span of nine deliveries before poor light and rainfall brought an early halt to Sunday’s play.
The situation is delicately balanced: England needs only 35 more runs, with four wickets still in hand. Yet, Chris Woakes is carrying a shoulder injury, and it’s anticipated he will only bat if absolutely necessary.
Adding to the pressure, India will have access to a fresh ball in just 3.4 overs, and their pace bowlers will be revitalized after a demanding day on the field.
This compelling series has pushed the limits of physical and mental resilience. The hosts currently hold a 2-1 advantage, marked by a record-breaking chase of 371 in Leeds and a determined defense of 193 at Lord’s.
Although India has frequently been in control, they need one last surge on Monday morning to secure a draw and prevent a series defeat.
The visiting team started Sunday with renewed focus. The fielders displayed high energy and vocal support, backing their bowlers with increased enthusiasm. Following Mohammed Siraj’s dismissal of Zak Crawley late on day three, Prasidh Krishna quickly removed Ben Duckett early on day four for a rapid 54.
Siraj struck again before the lunch interval, trapping Ollie Pope lbw with a sharp in-swinging delivery – Pope’s third such dismissal in the series. Pope scored 27 runs, bringing his series total to 304 at an average of 34; his form has declined since his century at Headingley.
A dramatic episode occurred when Harry Brook, at 19, attempted a counterattack. After hitting Akash Deep for a four and a six, Brook targeted Prasidh, but offered a chance at long leg.
Siraj secured the catch, but lost his footing and stepped onto the boundary cushion, granting Brook a reprieve. Prasidh had already begun his celebration, while Siraj could only watch in disbelief.
Brook took full advantage of this second opportunity, smashing 16 runs in the over and establishing a fluent partnership with Root. By lunch, the pair had added 58 runs in just over 10 overs.
Brook then surged to a remarkable century in just 91 balls – his first in a fourth innings and his tenth overall in only 50 Test innings.
His innings concluded in an unusual manner, with his bat slipping from his hands as he attempted a third consecutive boundary, leading to a catch at mid-off. Root, meanwhile, continued steadily, achieving his 39th Test century shortly after tea with an elegant flick off his pads.
He honored his mentor, Graham Thorpe, by wearing a white headband, promoting awareness for mental health charities.
However, India had not yet surrendered. Jacob Bethell, struggling for momentum due to limited match experience, edged a delivery from Prasidh onto his stumps. India’s celebrations were restrained, understanding that Root’s wicket was the pivotal target.
It arrived just two overs later when Prasidh generated movement off the seam to dismiss Root, caught behind for a masterful 106.
With cloud cover increasing and scoring becoming difficult, Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton managed only two runs from 20 balls. Siraj bowled tirelessly, completing his 22nd over of the day before poor light stopped play.
A late review for a catch behind heightened the tension, and soon after, heavy rain forced the umpires to end the day’s play. With the series outcome undecided, both teams must gather their strength for one final effort on what promises to be a thrilling fifth day.
