Dr. Adib Rizvi Honored with BMJ Special Recognition Award

Professor Dr. Adib Rizvi, a distinguished surgeon and philanthropist, has received the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Special Recognition Award. This accolade acknowledges his remarkable impact on medical science and healthcare within South Asia.

The BMJ, a prominent medical publication based in the UK with over a century of history, annually celebrates individuals, researchers, and institutions demonstrating exceptional service in medicine.

The award presentation occurred at a recent event in New Delhi. Dr. Sanjay Nagra, Co-Chair of the BMJ Advisory Board, delivered a tribute to Dr. Rizvi, acknowledging his pioneering work in establishing a fair and accessible healthcare system in Pakistan. This system is built upon an innovative collaboration between the government and the community.

Dr. Nagra also praised Dr. Rizvi’s steadfast dedication to providing free, high-quality medical care to the broader population with respect, dignity, and without discrimination based on caste, color, or religion.

Dr. Nagra accepted the award on Dr. Rizvi’s behalf. Dr. Rizvi addressed the audience via Zoom, expressing his sincere appreciation to the journal for its significant contribution to medical education and related research. He urged the editorial board to support and encourage other regional health institutions to emulate the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) model to enhance population healthcare.

He emphasized that political differences should be put aside to improve the well-being of underserved populations.

SIUT, founded by Dr. Rizvi and his colleagues at Civil Hospital Karachi approximately five decades ago, has evolved into a cutting-edge medical institution in the nation. It specializes in urology, nephrology, transplantation, and related fields.

Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta, a Pakistani pediatrician, also spoke at the event, along with Kamran Abbasi, Editor of BMJ, who attended virtually.
