Ben Askren Receives Double Lung Transplant

The wife of former MMA champion Ben Askren announced on Monday that he is recovering in the hospital after undergoing a double lung transplant. She expressed the family’s lasting gratitude to the donor and their family.

Askren was initially admitted to a Wisconsin hospital on June 7 after developing a critical case of pneumonia, which led to a diagnosis of severe lung damage.

After a multi-week wait, a suitable donor was identified, as confirmed by Askren’s wife in a Facebook post. She mentioned the difficulty in comprehending that he was healthy just weeks prior and requested prayers for his continued recovery.

Amy Askren wrote, “We are forever thankful to the donor and his family. This marks the start of a new chapter for Ben, and each day is a precious gift.”

“It’s surreal to think he was perfectly healthy just five weeks ago. Life can change so drastically in such a short time.”

“Please keep Ben in your thoughts, hoping his body accepts the new lungs seamlessly.”

Earlier in June, Askren was hospitalized, and after nine days, his wife shared that he remained on a ventilator. He was added to the transplant list on June 24. Askren’s wife recounted seeing him mouth the word “coffee,” despite being unable to have any. Subsequently, Askren underwent the transplant surgery.

She also conveyed her appreciation for the outpouring of support and intends to share it with Ben.

Amy added, “I am constantly amazed by the incredible support we’re receiving. I’m eager to share all of this with Ben. I am optimistic that Ben will be able to provide the next update in the coming weeks, ideally once the medication’s effects have subsided.”
