Borussia Dortmund Advances to Quarterfinals in FIFA Club World Cup

ATLANTA: Serhou Guirassy’s pair of goals in the opening 24 minutes propelled Borussia Dortmund to a 2-1 victory over CF Monterrey on Tuesday, securing their place in the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals. The match was held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Guirassy, now with three goals in the competition, capitalized on two assists from Karim Adeyemi as the German team established an early 2-0 advantage.

Following the match, Guirassy told reporters that he was pleased with the victory against Monterrey, noting Dortmund’s strong first-half performance but acknowledging challenges in the second half.

“It was a tough game. They’re a quality team with experienced players. We performed well in the first half. The second half presented more difficulties, but our determination was strong, and we achieved the win. We’re all delighted tonight,” Guirassy commented.

German Berterame narrowed the score for Monterrey in the 53rd minute, igniting hopes for the Mexican side. Monterrey sustained pressure throughout the second half, seeking an equalizer. However, Dortmund’s goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel, made several crucial saves, including a late header from veteran Sergio Ramos that narrowly missed the target.

Guirassy had opportunities to secure a hat-trick before the break, with one attempt missing narrowly and another thwarted by an excellent save from Monterrey’s goalkeeper, Esteban Andrada.

With this win, Borussia Dortmund becomes the fifth team to qualify for the quarterfinals, where they are slated to face Real Madrid on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The defeat signifies the exit of all CONCACAF teams from the tournament, with Monterrey following Inter Miami, who were previously defeated 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain.

Dortmund’s first-half effectiveness proved pivotal in a closely contested game, demonstrating the quality and resilience of both teams.
