Djokovic Achieves Milestone at French Open, Oldest to Reach Quarter-Finals Since 1971

Novak Djokovic, a three-time champion, advanced to the French Open quarter-finals after defeating Briton Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. This victory marks his 100th match win at Roland Garros, placing him alongside Rafael Nadal in an elite group.

The Serbian’s dominant display makes him only the second player to achieve a century of wins at the Parisian Grand Slam, following Nadal’s 112 victories. He remains on course for a potential record-extending 25th major title. The Olympic Games will also be held at the same venue this year.

This triumph means the French Open is now Djokovic’s most successful Grand Slam regarding match wins, surpassing his 99 victories at the Australian Open, where he has remarkably lifted the trophy ten times.

“This is a very special number and feels great, aiming for my 101st victory next,” Djokovic conveyed to the crowd in French. “My journey isn’t over yet in this tournament. I feel fantastic and cherish making history here. Hoping for another victory soon.”

By reaching the quarter-finals for the 16th consecutive year, Djokovic becomes the oldest player to reach this stage at Roland Garros since Istvan Gulyas, who was 39 years old in 1971.

Djokovic arrived in Paris having secured his 100th tour-level title in what had been an unremarkable year. So far, he has not conceded a set in the tournament, reminding his younger rivals of his persistent desire for further achievements.

After an early exchange of breaks with Norrie in the opening set, Djokovic controlled the 29-year-old to secure the set before overcoming a slight stumble on serve in the second set, ultimately doubling his lead on Court Philippe Chatrier.

“I feel confident and hold high expectations for my performance,” Djokovic commented, having secured his sixth win in as many matches against Norrie, previously defeating him en route to the Geneva title. “Each day, my play improves… 12 sets played and 12 sets won. Everything feels positive and solid at the moment.”

Djokovic secured a break to love in the third game of the third set following an unforced error by Norrie, and never looked back, securing his spot in the quarter-finals against German third seed Alexander Zverev.

Their most recent encounter was in the Australian Open semi-finals in January, when Djokovic was forced to retire due to injury. He will now aim to improve his 8-5 head-to-head record against the German player.
