Djokovic Withdraws from Italian Open
Novak Djokovic, the holder of a record 24 Grand Slam titles, has officially pulled out of the upcoming Italian Open in Rome, according to event organizers. The celebrated clay-court Masters competition, scheduled from May 7-18, will proceed without the presence of one of its most decorated champions.
The 37-year-old tennis icon did not specify the reason for his withdrawal. The announcement was conveyed through the tournament’s official social media platforms, lacking further elaboration.
Chasing 100th ATP Title
Djokovic, a six-time champion in Rome, having last won in 2022, remains in pursuit of his 100th ATP career title. His absence from this crucial event leading up to the French Open casts further doubt on his somewhat inconsistent 2025 season.
Season Struggles
Djokovic has yet to secure a title this season. He faced an unexpected defeat against Czech talent Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open final and suffered early exits at both the Monte Carlo Masters and the Madrid Open. His loss in Madrid was at the hands of Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi, following an earlier defeat on clay to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in Monaco.
Earlier this year, Djokovic mentioned that he had been dealing with an eye infection that impacted his vision and overall performance. He openly discussed the challenges of adjusting to a ‘new reality’ as he progresses in his career. After his loss in Madrid, Djokovic even hinted that it might have marked his final appearance at the tournament, leaving followers wondering about his future endeavors.
