Djokovic Advances to US Open Semifinals

NEW YORK: Novak Djokovic overcame American Taylor Fritz in a challenging match, advancing his pursuit of a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title. He secured a 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory in the US Open quarterfinal round at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Djokovic came into the match with a spotless 10-0 record when playing against Fritz. However, he was tested considerably by the American player before clinching a spot in the semifinals and maintaining his journey toward a significant milestone.

Fritz applied notable pressure on Djokovic, especially during the second and third sets. Despite failing to convert his initial 11 break-point opportunities against Djokovic, the ninth-seeded Fritz finally succeeded in the third set. Capitalizing on his powerful serve, he claimed the set, prolonging the match.

Djokovic answered in the fourth set, comfortably holding serve to establish a 5-4 advantage. He then secured the win when Fritz committed a double fault on match point.

Reflecting on the encounter, Djokovic acknowledged the closeness of the match and praised Fritz for his efforts.

“This was an incredibly tight contest. The match really could have gone either direction. I feel fortunate to have saved critical break points during the second set,” Djokovic stated.

“For a significant portion of the second and third sets, he outperformed me. In matches like these, the outcome hinges on a few critical moments. Luckily, those moments went in my favor, particularly near the conclusion of the fourth set.”

Djokovic is scheduled to play Carlos Alcaraz in a highly anticipated semifinal match as he seeks his fifth US Open title. He moves closer to achieving a record-setting 25th Grand Slam title.
