Liverpool’s Diogo Jota Dies in Car Crash
MADRID: Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has tragically died at the age of 28 following a car accident near Zamora, in northwestern Spain.
Reports indicate that his younger brother, Andre Silva, 25, also died in the same incident, according to international media sources.
The deadly accident reportedly happened shortly after midnight on Thursday. The vehicle they occupied swerved off the road and caught fire.
Spanish authorities have verified that two male victims, aged 28 and 25, were discovered at the scene. The deceased were transferred to a forensic center in Zamora for autopsies.
Jota became a Liverpool player in 2020, joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He played in 182 games for the Reds, scoring 65 goals in all competitions.
He was a significant player in the club’s recent achievements, which include the 2024–25 Premier League title, the FA Cup victory in 2022, and League Cup wins in 2022 and 2024.
Jota also played for the Portugal national team, earning 49 caps.
He participated in the UEFA Euro tournaments in 2020 and 2024, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Moreover, he was crucial in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025.
Ten days before the tragic incident, Jota married Rute Cardoso, his longtime partner. They have three young children.
