Herb Dean Defends Marc Goddard’s Decisions in Chimaev-Du Plessis Fight
International media sources reported on Friday that Herb Dean has come to the defense of Marc Goddard’s officiating during Khamzat Chimaev’s victory over Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319.
Chimaev secured a unanimous decision, with all judges scoring the contest 50-44 in his favor, allowing him to capture the middleweight title.
Chimaev inflicted damage upon his adversary early in the first round, initiating a swift takedown and securing a crucifix position. The subsequent round mirrored this pattern.
By the third and fourth rounds, the South African fighter struggled to escape compromising positions, limiting his opportunities for a comeback.
Goddard faced scrutiny regarding his standups during the Chimaev-Du Plessis bout on August 16 in Chicago.
However, Dean, a fellow official, defended Goddard’s choices, asserting that his standups were justified.
”I don’t believe there was anything incorrect with [Goddard’s] standups,” Dean stated.
“Chimaev held command throughout the fight. This prompts an ongoing discussion among stakeholders and enthusiasts: ‘What vision do we hold for this sport?
“Do we desire competitors to attain a commanding position which, without exploiting it to defeat their rival, may be perceived as a refuge or a tactic to waste time?’
“And I would never accuse Khamzat of seeking refuge, given his ferocious nature. However, when a fighter achieves a position like the crucifix, chest-to-chest, with minimal elevation, it becomes exceedingly challenging to effectively strike the opponent. While elbows may sometimes be an option.”
