Ishaq Dar Addresses UN on Sustainable Development

NEW YORK: Speaking at the United Nations, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the necessity for developed nations to provide debt relief and increase access to grant-based resources for developing countries to achieve their sustainable development objectives.

Dar addressed the high-level political forum on sustainable development, highlighting Pakistan’s dedication to the 2030 Agenda. He noted that the country has launched impactful initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive growth, reinforcing climate resilience, and enacting significant economic overhauls.

The Deputy Prime Minister pinpointed the worldwide food shortage and the escalating effects of climate change as key challenges confronting the international community.

He stated that the Uraan Pakistan initiative stands as a pivotal program for national advancement, complemented by the establishment of Danish schools designed to cater to disadvantaged children, with beneficiary verification handled through NADRA.

Furthermore, Pakistan is committed to supporting its middle class via the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), ensuring comprehensive inclusion.

Dar also mentioned Pakistan’s commitment to generating 60% of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2030. Initiatives such as Recharge Pakistan and Living Indus are instrumental in strengthening the nation’s resilience to climate-related impacts. Efforts to empower the youth are being driven forward through the Digital Youth Hub and the network of Danish Schools.

He added that comprehensive macroeconomic reforms are underway to stabilize the nation’s economy and create a more attractive environment for investments. The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) is playing a crucial role in channeling foreign investments into priority sectors.

Dar emphasized the critical need for reforms in global finance, asserting that fundamental changes to the existing international financial architecture are vital for the successful attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He concluded by stating that the UN’s upcoming 80th anniversary presents a unique opportunity to reinforce the organization and enhance its capacity to effectively address current global challenges.
