Kagiso Rabada Suspended After Positive Drug Test
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has verified that fast bowler Kagiso Rabada tested positive for a recreational drug during the SA20 competition earlier in the year. The prominent bowler is presently under provisional suspension, resulting in his unexpected departure from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 in early April.
According to a statement issued by CSA on Saturday, Rabada’s sample revealed a prohibited substance. Gujarat Titans, his IPL team, had initially attributed his exit on April 3 to a “significant personal matter,” without providing additional information or a return date.
“The situation is unfortunate,” CSA remarked. “Nevertheless, Rabada has assured CSA and his followers of his dedication to maintaining professional standards and his ongoing love for cricket and representing his nation. CSA reaffirms its strong commitment to drug-free sport and reminds all players, both professional and amateur, of the significance of adhering to anti-doping regulations.”
Rabada addressed the matter publicly via the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), conveying profound regret.
“I am deeply sorry to all those I have let down,” he stated. “I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me.”
The 29-year-old played for MI Cape Town in the SA20, where the violation allegedly occurred.
While the suspension’s length has not been formally established, various reports indicate that Rabada is anticipated to return to professional cricket soon. CSA is reportedly unconcerned about his participation in the forthcoming World Test Championship Final against Australia in June.
Rabada also voiced his appreciation to his agent, CSA, SACA, his legal team, and particularly his family and friends for their encouragement during what he termed an “embarrassing saga.”
“This moment will not define me,” he added. “I will keep doing what I have always done – working hard and playing with passion.”
The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), operating under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, is expected to issue a comprehensive statement next week.
Rabada remains a key bowler for South Africa, having taken 327 wickets in 70 Tests at a 22 average, along with 168 wickets in 108 ODIs and 71 wickets in 65 T20Is.
