Cormier Questions Oliveira’s Quick Return After Knockout
Following Charles Oliveira’s recent defeat to Ilia Topuria, UFC commentator Daniel Cormier has voiced concerns regarding Oliveira’s swift return to UFC Rio, according to reports.
Oliveira, a celebrated figure in the sport, is highly regarded by fans for his accomplishments, notably his UFC lightweight championship.
However, his previous fight saw the Brazilian suffer a first-round knockout against Topuria at UFC 317 in June.
Despite this setback, Oliveira has opted for a quick comeback, headlining UFC Rio against lightweight contender Rafael Fiziev. This decision has prompted debate, with Cormier suggesting it may be premature.
Cormier stated, “Every time ‘Do Bronx’ is set to compete, it generates excitement. However, upon further reflection, the fact that Charles Oliveira experienced a significant knockout just last month raises concerns.”
“Charles Oliveira is universally liked due to his amiable nature and remarkable fighting career. But the question arises: is this return too soon?”
“That was my initial thought after the initial excitement of Charles Oliveira fighting Rafael Fiziev wore off. It promises to be an explosive match, given their striking abilities.”
Cormier shared an experience from his own career, recalling a time when he declined a fight offer after losing to Jon Jones.
“In 2017, after my knockout loss to Jon Jones, I received an immediate fight offer. However, I declined, prioritizing brain recovery. Rushing back, I felt, would have been detrimental. I waited to ensure complete health before returning to the Octagon.” Cormier added.
