CCP Intensifies Competition Law Advocacy in 2024-2025
During 2024-2025, the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) sustained a vigorous advocacy effort, conducting 37 awareness and training programs. These initiatives aimed to boost comprehension of, and adherence to, the Competition Act of 2010. The sessions engaged diverse participants, including enterprises, legal experts, academics, government representatives, and professional organizations.
Key Sectors Targeted
The Commission’s outreach initiatives prioritized critical sectors to tackle issues such as misleading advertising, cartel conduct, the exploitation of dominant market positions, and novel challenges in the retail and e-commerce sectors. The CCP collaborated with prominent trade and business groups, such as the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), and the Chainstore Association of Pakistan (CAP), to improve awareness among businesses.
Engagement with Legal and Corporate Sectors
To connect with the legal and corporate communities, the CCP forged alliances with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP), the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), and legal associations like the Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) and the Punjab Bar Council (PBC). Through training programs for directors, corporate leaders received instruction on competition compliance and effective governance, while attorneys participated in advanced training focused on legal structures and enforcement strategies.
Academic Outreach
In the academic arena, the Commission presented sessions at esteemed institutions, including GC University Lahore, Bahria University, the University of Peshawar, The University of Faisalabad, and the International Islamic University Islamabad. These sessions introduced students and faculty to the fundamental principles of competition law through interactive discussions and real-world case studies.
Capacity Building
A notable advancement in capacity-building involved a lecture by Dr. Amber Darr, which focused on methods for cartel screening and detection. This session equipped CCP officials and other regulatory personnel with advanced tools for detecting collusive practices.
