Alcaraz Set to Clash with Fellow Spaniard Munar in Pre-Quarterfinals

LONDON: Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning French Open champion, demonstrated his prowess by defeating Adam Walton of Australia with a score of 6-4, 7-6(4). This victory propels him into the last 16 of the Queen’s Club Championships, held at the Andy Murray Arena on Tuesday.

Alcaraz commenced with an aggressive style, encountering a challenge from Walton, who showcased notable skill, particularly in the second set. The Spanish player regrouped and secured victory in the tiebreak.

Originally slated to compete against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Alcaraz’s plans shifted due to Fokina’s withdrawal resulting from illness. This turn of events presented Walton with the chance to face the French Open champion as Alcaraz prepares to defend his Wimbledon title.

The 2023 Queen’s Club champion expressed his surprise at facing Adam after his warm-up, acknowledging the Australian player’s prior match experience. He complimented the Australian, noting his impressive performance.

“Upon concluding my warm-up, I became aware that Adam would be my opponent. He had already participated in several matches. I believe his level of play was exceptional,” Alcaraz commented.

Following his triumph, Carlos Alcaraz conveyed his satisfaction with both the win and his return to grass courts, while also recognizing potential difficulties.

“It caught me off guard somewhat, so I anticipated some challenges today. Nevertheless, I am extremely pleased to have secured the win.

“I am incredibly happy to be back on grass. It’s a distinctive surface and a place that holds significance for me.”

Alcaraz is scheduled to compete against compatriot Jaume Munar in the pre-quarterfinals on Thursday.
