Alcaraz Set to Clash with Nardi in Next Round
World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz showcased his dominance by defeating Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic 6-4, 6-4, securing a spot in the last 16 of the Cincinnati Open. Despite the intense Ohio heat, this victory marked his 50th of the season.
The Spanish player extended his winning streak to 13 consecutive matches at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, successfully converting seven break points in a measured, deliberate performance.
Medjedovic received medical attention for neck discomfort following the initial set. Alcaraz, however, maintained his composure and concluded the match with fewer unforced errors than his adversary.
Alcaraz finished the match with just 18 unforced errors, securing the set victory.
After his victory, Alcaraz acknowledged Medjedovic’s power, complimenting his shots. He also admitted his strategy involved forcing Medjedovic to cover the court extensively.
Alcaraz’s Comments
“I recognize him as a truly powerful player,” Alcaraz stated.
“His returns are incredibly challenging, and he possesses a formidable serve. I knew he prefers to avoid excessive lateral movement, so my approach centered on maximizing his running.”
Alcaraz’s next challenge will be against Italian Luca Nardi in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
In the women’s division, second seed Coco Gauff progressed to the fourth round after Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine withdrew due to illness. This marks the second walkover in the third round of the tournament.
Gauff is now set to compete against Lucia Bronzetti, who emerged victorious against 23rd seed Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
