Butt Selects Qadir and Akram in His All-Time ODI XI
Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt has revealed his all-time One Day International dream team, which includes a couple of Pakistani legends and some of the finest international cricketers.
In a recent interview on a local sports channel, Butt named spin bowling maestro Abdul Qadir and pace bowling legend Wasim Akram in his lineup. The squad also features legendary players from Sri Lanka, the West Indies, India, South Africa, and England.
All-rounder Ben Stokes was chosen as the captain, while former South African batter AB de Villiers was selected as the wicketkeeper.
Selection Rationale
Butt explained that his selections were based on players who could perform well in any era.
“These players weren’t only suited to their time; each of them could excel in today’s cricket. From an ODI standpoint, I’ve tried to consider their abilities across different generations,” he stated.
He further explained the strict standards used to assess players for the contemporary game, emphasizing physical condition, adaptability, and strategic influence.
“If we bring them into today’s cricket, and evaluate their fitness levels, analyze their bowling techniques over time, assess their ability to win matches, consider their leadership skills and versatility, and also note that this XI has two wicketkeepers,” Butt added.
Imran Khan’s Omission
When questioned about the absence of former Pakistan World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan, Butt responded respectfully while maintaining his perspective.
“He didn’t make the cut, what can we do? I acknowledge Imran Khan’s greatness—he’s an exceptional cricketer, and Pakistan has likely produced very few players who surpass him. However, when considering the context and current cricket, it differs from the era in which he thrived,” he clarified.
