India Mulls Over Bumrah’s Participation in Second Test
BIRMINGHAM: When questioned on Tuesday, England’s captain, Ben Stokes, declined to comment on whether Jasprit Bumrah would participate in the second Test, which is slated to commence this Wednesday at Edgbaston.
Following their five-wicket loss in the series’ initial match held in Leeds, the visiting team has yet to confirm if Bumrah, their key bowler, will be included in the upcoming game. This consideration is part of their strategy to carefully manage his playing time.
Prior to the series, sources indicated that the right-arm fast bowler was expected to participate in only three of the five matches. This approach aims to prevent a recurrence of his back injury, which required surgery earlier this year.
Bumrah played in the first match of the series, achieving a five-wicket haul during the first innings. However, he did not secure any wickets in the second innings as England successfully chased a challenging 371-run target, securing their victory.
Bumrah took part in an optional practice session on Saturday, bowling for approximately 30 minutes. This led to speculation about his potential inclusion in the second Test.
However, India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, mentioned on Monday that the final decision regarding Bumrah’s participation would be made at ‘the very last minute’.
During the pre-match press conference held earlier, the England captain, Ben Stokes, was asked for his perspective on this matter.
However, the all-rounder avoided a direct answer, mentioning that it was India’s concern. He did commend the Indian side as a passionate team that consistently demonstrates resilience.
“That’s a matter for India to resolve. I am the captain of the England team. They are a strong team, always competitive, and display great passion,” Stokes remarked.
“It’s evident that international athletes face considerable pressure, but in cricket, playing for India adds an extra layer of intensity. They are a nation with immense pride,” he added.
