Former UFC Fighter Ben Askren Reflects on Post-Transplant Experience
Ben Askren, previously a UFC fighter, has described his journey following a double transplant as ‘humbling,’ according to recent reports.
Askren’s health took a turn on June 7 when he was hospitalized in Wisconsin due to severe pneumonia. Subsequent evaluations revealed significant damage to his lungs.
Earlier in May, Askren was in good health and making plans that did not involve a prolonged hospital stay and a fight for his life.
After an initial 59-day stay, he was discharged, only to be readmitted shortly after due to an infection. Throughout his treatment, Askren and his family have consistently shared updates on his progress.
This past Sunday, Askren posted a video on social media from his hospital bed, offering insights into his experience post-double-transplant.
“I think this is update number eight, and I’m still in the hospital. I came in on Monday for what I thought was just a check-up, but they found an infection, and it’s been one thing after another since then,” Askren explained.
“I will get out of here eventually, but I don’t know when, so I’m trying to be patient and not get too frustrated.”
“I wanted to discuss the topic of pride today. This whole experience has been incredibly humbling. Before all of this, I was very self-sufficient.”
Askren further elaborated on the humbling aspects of his situation and the necessity of seeking support.
“I always took care of myself and rarely asked for assistance. But when I couldn’t even walk or talk, I had to ask for help,” Askren stated.
“Even now, especially when I’m at home, I still need help because I can’t do much on my own. It’s been a humbling experience, but a beneficial one.”
Askren, a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion and a 2008 U.S. Olympic team member, officially retired from MMA in 2019. He briefly returned to combat sports in April 2021 for a boxing match against Jake Paul, which he lost.
