South Africa Gears Up for Pakistan Test Series Ahead of India Tour

South Africa is scheduled to commence their tour of Pakistan with the opening Test match in Lahore, spanning from October 12 to 16.

South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, has highlighted the significance of gaining strong momentum in the forthcoming Test series against Pakistan. This is particularly important as the Proteas prepare for their tour to India later this year.

Bavuma stated that the two-match Test series in Pakistan presents an ideal chance for his team to sharpen their skills and tactics before they confront India, widely recognized as one of the most formidable opponents in international cricket.

“Looking ahead, the series against India will be a major challenge for us. The team is heading to Pakistan first, where they will tackle the immediate task at hand. Following that, we have India. For those who have played in India before, we understand the intensity of the competition. However, like any series or match, opportunities exist,” Bavuma commented.

“Our ambition is definitely to emerge victorious. To achieve that, we recognize that we must perform at our absolute best,” he added.

Bavuma, who recently steered South Africa to their first World Test Championship title, also mentioned his plans to consult with New Zealand’s captain, Kane Williamson, for insights on how to achieve success in Indian playing conditions.

“Touring India presents unique challenges. New Zealand’s approach was inspiring. Many touring teams have struggled to find success there,” he noted.

“I’ve heard Kane Williamson will be around, so I’m keen to get his advice on their strategies.”

The 35-year-old drew inspiration from New Zealand’s clean sweep victory over India in October–November 2024, where the Black Caps made history as the first team to achieve a whitewash against India in a three-match Test series on their home turf.

He also acknowledged India’s cricketing evolution under Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, while noting the emergence of a new generation led by Shubman Gill.

“Shubman Gill has successfully transitioned into significant roles within both Test and ODI formats. He is an exciting talent, and it signals a new chapter. Rohit and Kohli have made substantial contributions, elevating India to a dominant force,” he said.

“There comes a point where the younger players you’ve guided step up. I’m confident India will remain a dominant team. Our objective as South Africans is to limit their dominance as much as possible.”

The South Africa tour of Pakistan will commence with the first Test in Lahore from October 12 to 16, succeeded by the second Test in Rawalpindi from October 20 to 24.

This marks South Africa’s first Test series in Pakistan since 2021, where the home side won 2-0.

Following the Test matches, both teams will participate in a three-match T20I series from October 28 to November 1, and a three-match ODI series in Faisalabad from November 4 to 8.
