Krejcikova Withdraws from Eastbourne Quarter-Finals Due to Thigh Injury

LONDON: Barbora Krejcikova, the reigning Wimbledon champion, has expressed optimism about participating in the upcoming All England Club tournament. This follows her withdrawal from the Eastbourne Open due to a thigh injury, according to reports. She is balancing high expectations with concerns about her physical condition.

Krejcikova advanced to the quarter-finals in Eastbourne after a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3) victory over Jodie Burrage. However, she subsequently withdrew from the competition to ensure her fitness for Wimbledon.

The Czech player’s time on the court has been limited, with a back injury sidelining her for six months. She has participated in only six matches since her return in May.

Krejcikova told reporters on Sunday that she feels well and anticipates being ready to compete on Tuesday.

“Returning as defending champion isn’t difficult. It’s actually very nice to be here and to play, especially after being out for so long,” Krejcikova said.

“I’m enjoying it and happy to be here. I find it challenging, but not difficult. I’m looking forward to playing on Tuesday.

“It’s essentially a new tournament, even though I won last year and have great memories. I want to perform well again. My preparation is consistent; I’ve worked hard to return and enjoy this position.”

Krejcikova is scheduled to face Alexandra Eala in the first round. Eala, a 20-year-old from the Philippines, gained attention by defeating Iga Swiatek to reach the Miami Open semi-finals in March before advancing to the Eastbourne final.

The Czech tennis star mentioned that she is not very familiar with her opponent due to the Filipino player’s youth but acknowledges her recent achievements.

“I don’t know much about her yet because she’s a young, upcoming player, part of the new generation,” Krejcikova stated.

“However, I’ve watched some rallies and matches. I know she performed well in the first half of the year, so I’m looking forward to it. It should be a great matchup, and I’m eager to see where the young generation stands,” she concluded.
