Akram Supports Young Pakistan Squad to Consistently Defeat Top Teams
DUBAI: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram voiced his support on Tuesday for star batsman Babar Azam to represent the nation in T20Is, despite his exclusion from the current squad for the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025.
Babar, holding the second spot in all-time T20I run-scoring charts, has been out of favor in the format since the three-match series against South Africa last December.
He was ultimately absent from Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad as the former champions prioritize developing young talent ahead of next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Akram, a member of the commentary team for the tournament, advocated for Babar’s inclusion in the national T20I team, emphasizing his potential usefulness in chasing targets between 150 and 160 on difficult pitches.
“I recently mentioned my desire for Babar to be in T20s. Consider his value against strong opponents when chasing 150 or 160 on challenging wickets; it can be difficult,” Akram stated to an Indian media outlet.
“Adjustments to the game might be necessary, which could be beneficial. However, the team is currently performing adequately. Babar and Rizwan were given ample opportunities as openers over 4 or 5 years. While they performed well, consistency was lacking, leading to the inclusion of new players,” he added.
The legendary bowler expressed confidence in the young Pakistani team, including T20I captain Salman Ali Agha, praising their courageous approach and asserting their ability to regularly defeat top-tier teams.
“With Babar and Rizwan absent, the intention seems to be transitioning to these younger players. They have performed admirably, although inconsistently, but possess the right mentality. They exhibit no fear of defeat. When the fear of losing is present, one succumbs to pressure,” Wasim Akram explained.
“These players might face losses, but I believe Salman Agha is a capable captain, leading by example. He sacrifices his batting position based on the situation. It’s crucial to avoid excessive experimentation with this team. They have the potential to consistently triumph over top teams,” he concluded.
