Babar Azam Joins Sydney Sixers for BBL 15

The Sydney Sixers have officially announced the acquisition of Pakistani batting star and former captain Babar Azam for the upcoming BBL 15 season. This move marks one of the most significant player additions in the history of the Big Bash League.

Babar, celebrated as a premier batter in contemporary cricket, is anticipated to bring his renowned elegance, stability, and vast experience to the Sixers this summer season.

Having accumulated over 10,000 runs in international cricket across all formats, the 30-year-old has solidified his reputation as one of the sport’s most consistent and dependable performers.

According to BBL rules, each team is permitted to sign one international player prior to the official BBL 15 Draft, which is slated for Thursday, June 19. The Sixers have capitalized on this provision to secure the services of the Pakistani maestro.

A central figure in Pakistan’s national cricket team for more than a decade, the 30-year-old served as captain across all three formats from 2019 to 2024. During his tenure, he led Pakistan to the semi-final of the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup and the final of the 2022 edition.

Known for his composure in high-pressure situations and his technical prowess, the right-handed batter has consistently been ranked among the top batters in both ODIs and T20Is.

His achievements include being honored as the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year in both 2021 and 2022, in addition to being named ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year in 2022. He also holds the record for being the fastest to reach 5,000 ODI runs, achieving this milestone in just 97 innings.

He enriches the team with substantial T20 experience, boasting over 11,000 runs in the format and a prominent presence in major global leagues, such as the Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League, and various domestic competitions in England.

This significant signing ensures that Babar will make his debut in the BBL and remain available for the entirety of the season, including the finals, which significantly bolsters the Sixers’ aspirations for a championship.
