Tom Aspinall Declared Champion After Jon Jones Steps Down
Andy Aspinall, father of Tom Aspinall, expressed his desire for his son, the UFC heavyweight champion, to participate in a boxing match, according to recent reports.
Following the announcement of MMA icon Jon Jones’s retirement on June 21, Tom Aspinall, the interim champion with the longest reign in UFC history, has been formally recognized as the new undisputed heavyweight champion.
His first title defense has been scheduled, and he is slated to face Ciryl Gane of France at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi on October 25.
Andy Aspinall, Tom’s coach since childhood, voiced his enthusiasm for seeing his son compete in a boxing ring for a lucrative bout.
“He’ll compete soon and then, ideally, again in January,” Andy commented on Aspinall’s YouTube channel.
“I’d like to see him headline an event in England, if that’s what he wants, and then assess his options… I’d be thrilled if he had a very well-compensated boxing match for the financial gain.
“The funds are available, and I believe someone as skilled as Tom deserves a share, considering boxers earn significantly more, exceeding a hundredfold.”
Andy also suggested that the UFC’s compensation for Tom is insufficient and that a transition to boxing would be beneficial.
“The UFC doesn’t offer that level of payment,” he stated.
“If they did, it would be excellent, enabling him to earn substantially, but I believe the elite one percent should be rewarded fairly.
“Moreover, it’s perilous. So, when he has accumulated enough, I’d recommend withdrawing from it.”
