Sabalenka Regrets Calling French Open Final ‘The Worst’ After Loss to Gauff
Aryna Sabalenka has issued an apology for what she describes as ‘unprofessional’ remarks made following her defeat to Coco Gauff in the French Open final earlier in June. She admitted that she allowed her emotions to cloud her judgment.
In the three-set Roland Garros final, Sabalenka was overcome by Gauff, who secured her first French Open title after mounting a comeback from a set down.
Following the match, Sabalenka characterized it as ‘the worst final’ she had ever participated in. She also suggested that Iga Swiatek would have been victorious against Gauff had she been Sabalenka’s opponent.
“If Iga had defeated me the other day, I believe she would have gone on to win. Yes, it is painful,” Sabalenka expressed in Paris.
In a recent statement, Sabalenka conceded that her behavior lacked professionalism and expressed remorse for her previous statements.
“That was entirely unprofessional of me. My emotions took control,” Sabalenka acknowledged.
“I deeply regret my past words. We all commit errors, and I am simply a human being still navigating life.”
She added, “I believe everyone experiences moments of losing control. The distinction is that the world is watching me, and I receive more criticism for my actions than others do.”
The world number one further explained that it took her some time to reflect upon and comprehend the situation.
“I was incredibly emotional and lacked composure during that press conference. It required time to revisit the situation with an open mind and gain understanding. I gained significant insights about myself,” Sabalenka stated.
