DETROIT: In a Saturday MLB matchup at Comerica Park, Taylor Ward propelled the Los Angeles Angels to a 7-4 win against the Detroit Tigers. His performance included three hits, highlighted by a two-run homer that put the Angels in the lead.
Ward’s contributions extended to a double and two runs, solidifying the Angels’ second consecutive triumph. Jo Adell added to the offensive firepower with a three-run homer, while Luis Rengifo contributed a solo home run in the eighth.
Yusei Kikuchi, the Angels’ starting pitcher, pitched five innings, conceding four runs on eight hits and recording seven strikeouts.
The Angels’ bullpen maintained the lead with four scoreless innings, culminating in Kenley Jansen securing his 21st save of the season.
Detroit momentarily held a 2-1 advantage in the second inning, fueled by Wenceel Perez’s triple and RBI hits from Andy Ibanez and Jake Rogers.
The Angels countered in the fourth, reclaiming the lead with Adell’s three-run homer, following singles by Ward and a hit-by-pitch to Yoan Moncada.
The Tigers leveled the score in their half of the fourth with RBIs from Matt Vierling and Gleyber Torres, but the Angels prevented them from retaking the lead.
Nolan Schanuel’s single to begin the fifth inning paved the way for Ward’s two-run homer to left-center, his 27th of the season, giving Los Angeles a 6-4 lead.
Charlie Morton (7-10), in his second start for Detroit since being acquired from Baltimore, allowed six runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings, despite achieving 10 strikeouts.
The Angels edged the Tigers in hits, 10-9, with Javier Baez collecting three hits for Detroit. Detroit’s Casey Mize is scheduled to pitch against Jack Kochanowicz on Sunday in the series finale.
