Pakistan Secures Victory Against Afghanistan in T20I Tri-Series Opener
SHARJAH: Following Pakistan’s impressive 39-run victory against Afghanistan in the initial T20I tri-series match held at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday, Pakistan’s skipper, Salman Ali Agha, lauded Mohammad Nawaz as the most exceptional bowler.
The Green Shirts successfully defended their score of 183, dismissing Afghanistan for a mere 143 in 19.5 overs.
Haris Rauf, the right-arm fast bowler, emerged as the leading wicket-taker, claiming four wickets. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem, and Nawaz each secured two wickets.
Despite Rauf’s impressive four-wicket performance, Agha emphasized Nawaz’s significance, acknowledging his skill in delivering crucial overs under demanding circumstances as a finger-spinner.
He further commended Rauf and Shaheen, recognizing them as among the finest pace bowlers globally.
Agha stated during the post-match presentation, “The bowling performance was remarkable across the board. Haris and Shaheen stand out as premier fast bowlers globally.”
He further commented, “Nawaz was the most impressive bowler in my view; his performance was exceptional. It’s not easy being a finger-spinner, and he consistently bowls during critical overs. I am very pleased for him.”
The skipper made a significant contribution to Pakistan’s impressive total of 182/7, leading the score with an undefeated 53 from 36 balls, which included three fours and an equal number of sixes.
Reflecting on his dynamic innings, Agha mentioned his confidence in hitting sixes against any spinner, attributing this ability to their early arrival in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which was 10 days prior to the current series.
Agha further explained, “Having observed the initial 7-8 overs, I noted the ball was holding up on slower deliveries. I was confident that once settled, I could hit a few sixes against any spinner.”
“While I may not be at my absolute best, we have considerable experience playing spin. Arriving here 10 days in advance has prepared us for the expected spin conditions, and we feel prepared for the challenge.
“Achieving an above-par score on what seemed like a 150-160 wicket, we knew that reaching 180 would pose a significant challenge. Our team discussions consistently emphasize the importance of exceeding par scores. We possess a strong batting lineup, with Faheem batting at number 8 and capable of single-handedly winning a match.”
