DRAP Launches Nationwide Crackdown on Counterfeit Medicines
In a sweeping operation to protect public health, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has seized multiple batches of counterfeit medicines across the country. The coordinated raids targeted medical markets in various provinces, uncovering 10 different fake drugs being sold under the names of reputable pharmaceutical brands.
Fake Medicines Pose Serious Health Risks
The seized products included counterfeit antibiotics, nasal sprays, anti-allergy treatments, gastrointestinal drugs, diuretics, and medications for fever, pain, ulcers, and anxiety disorders. Laboratory testing confirmed that these drugs contained no authentic raw materials and lacked verified efficacy, making them potentially life-threatening.
Illicit Manufacturing and Fraudulent Labeling
According to DRAP, the counterfeit medicines were being illegally manufactured and distributed under the guise of well-known national and multinational pharmaceutical companies. Labels falsely listed company addresses from Karachi and Kasur, misleading consumers and healthcare providers.
Rapid Alerts and Public Warnings Issued
In response, DRAP has issued rapid alerts to healthcare professionals and the general public, warning them of the dangers posed by these fake products. Citizens are urged to report any suspicious medicines found in markets to help curb the spread of counterfeit drugs.
Provincial Drug Control Departments Intensify Surveillance
Provincial drug control directorates have been instructed to ramp up surveillance and enforcement efforts. These measures aim to safeguard public health and ensure that only verified, safe medicines reach consumers.
A Call for Vigilance and Accountability
This crackdown underscores the urgent need for stronger pharmaceutical oversight and public awareness. As DRAP continues its mission to eliminate counterfeit drugs, collaboration between authorities, healthcare providers, and citizens will be key to protecting lives and restoring trust in Pakistan’s healthcare system.
