Renowned Businessman and Philanthropist Rafiq Habib Passes Away

Rafiq Habib, a distinguished figure in Pakistani business and philanthropy, died on Wednesday in Dubai at the age of 88.

Born in 1937, Mr. Habib formerly held the position of chairman at the House of Habib, a prominent financial and business group in Pakistan.

Beyond his achievements in the business sector, Habib made substantial contributions to the advancement of higher learning. He served as the founding chancellor of the Habib University Foundation, actively participating in the development of its educational strategy with an emphasis on creative and comprehensive learning approaches.

Habib University released an official announcement confirming his death via Instagram, stating: “It is with deep sadness that Habib University acknowledges the loss of its founding chancellor.”

Wasif Rizvi, the President of Habib University, lauded Rafiq Habib’s contributions.

In a statement, Rizvi stated, “Rafiq Sahib, a visionary within the esteemed Habib family, envisioned a world-class higher education institution in Karachi. Where some might have hesitated due to uncertainty, he saw opportunity. He always reminded us that this university should be more than just an academic institution, but a living demonstration of the Habib family’s century-long dedication to the common good, education, and the highest ideals of service.”

The statement continued: “As the University’s Founding President, I had the privilege of having a special relationship and history with him. In the early stages, it often seemed like we were a team of two; he was the anchor and protector of the vision, while I was its first manager, working together to establish what would become Habib University. His confidence and steady leadership inspired me to start, and his support was always reassuring throughout the process.”

“The thousands of young women and men who have attended Habib University, and will continue to do so for many years to come, are a testament to his vision. His generosity was never about recognition, but an act of dedication to knowledge, service, and the idea that education is the most valuable legacy one can leave to society.”

The statement concluded, “We will deeply miss you, RMH. Your presence gave us assurance, your absence leaves us grieving, but your legacy will always guide us. Habib University will continue to make every effort to uphold the vision you entrusted to us.”
