The Pakistani government is taking decisive steps to bring online educators and digital academies into the formal tax regime, part of a wider initiative to integrate high-revenue sectors currently operating outside the tax net.
Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman, Rashid Mehmood Langrial, highlighted the significant revenues being generated in this space, noting that some online academies earn as much as Rs200 million per month without contributing to the national exchequer.
The newly proposed taxation framework is designed to formally register these digital institutions and bring them under the tax umbrella. This move will also extend to individual educators who are monetizing online content, subjecting their earnings to personal income taxation.
In a related development, the Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) has expressed concerns over recent budget cuts to higher education. The association has urged the government to reconsider these cuts, warning of potential financial distress for public universities across the country.
