Strengthening Economic Ties Between Pakistan and the Philippines
Pakistan and the Philippines have taken a significant step toward deepening their economic relationship by exploring the possibility of a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA). This development emerged during the 2nd Meeting of the Pakistan-Philippines Joint Economic Commission (JEC) held in Manila, where officials from both nations emphasized the importance of stronger trade and investment cooperation.
The meeting was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Secretary of Economic Affairs Division Muhammad Humair Karim Kidwai and the Philippines’ Undersecretary for International Trade Atty Allan B Gepty. Ambassadors from both countries, along with senior officials, participated in discussions that highlighted untapped potential in bilateral trade.
Pakistan underscored its export strengths in agricultural goods and halal-certified products, proposing initiatives such as trade fairs, business forums, and enhanced private sector engagement. Both sides agreed to reactivate the Pakistan-Philippines Joint Business Council to encourage greater collaboration.
Sectoral cooperation was a key focus, with discussions spanning agriculture, irrigation, halal development, health and pharmaceuticals, banking, taxation, higher education, energy, minerals, tourism, and visa facilitation. In agriculture, emphasis was placed on seed development, plant variety protection, and community-based irrigation projects. Halal development talks centered on certification exchanges and supply chain strengthening, while health sector discussions explored regulatory cooperation and medical device trade.
Banking and taxation cooperation included digital payments, remittance corridors, and updates to the Double Taxation Agreement. Education and training were also highlighted, with both sides supporting collaboration in technical and vocational education.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to deepen economic ties and translate agreed initiatives into tangible outcomes. The exploration of a PTA marks a promising step toward unlocking new opportunities for trade and investment between Pakistan and the Philippines.
