The government has decided to impose a countrywide smart lockdown on Saturdays and Sundays, effective immediately. This decision comes amid escalating tensions in the region that are hindering fuel supplies. The lockdown is aimed at tackling the energy crisis in the country. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has given his approval for the proposal, which will now come into force. All business activities will remain suspended during the lockdown duration.
The government has proposed a range of measures to minimize the impact on daily life and essential services. During the lockdown period, all markets and commercial activities have been prohibited, while wedding ceremonies are also off-limits. However, public transport is expected to continue running, with hospitals, pharmacies, and essential public services remaining open.
The duration of the lockdown has been recommended from 12:00 PM on Saturdays to 11:59 PM on Sundays. This will allow for some flexibility while still imposing significant restrictions on daily life. The government aims to minimize disruptions to essential services during this time.
Ports, railways, and air travel are expected to continue as per routine during the lockdown period. However, all non-essential activities have been suspended, including sports events and gatherings of more than a few people.
