The National Highway Authority (NHA) has announced a substantial increase in toll taxes across Pakistan’s motorways. Effective June 15, 2025, vehicles without a valid M-Tag or insufficient balance will pay up to 50% more in toll fees. This hike translates into more than 100% total increase in certain categories when combined with revised base rates.
New Toll Charges for Passenger Cars on Key Routes
Under the revised structure:
- On the M-2 Lahore–Islamabad motorway, car tolls have increased from Rs1,200 to Rs1,800.
- On the M-3 Lahore–Abdul Hakeem route, car toll has jumped from Rs800 to Rs1,200.
- On the M-1 Islamabad–Peshawar motorway, the car toll has increased from Rs550 to Rs825.
Heavy Vehicles Face Significant Burden
Commercial and freight vehicles face the largest hikes:
- Articulated trucks using the M-2 now pay Rs10,200, up from Rs6,800.
- Buses, vans, and 2-3 axle trucks across all major highways now face toll increases of 50% on top of existing rates.
- National highway rates have also increased: cars now pay Rs70, vans Rs150, buses Rs250, and 3-axle trucks Rs300.
Policy Aims to Boost M-Tag Usage and Digital Compliance
This increase is part of NHA’s strategy to enforce nationwide M-Tag compliance, reduce congestion at toll plazas, and enhance revenue collection through automation and digital tracking systems. The goal is to shift all toll transactions to a contactless, tag-based model.
Public Backlash and Legal Challenges Expected
Motorists and commuters have voiced strong opposition to the steep toll hikes. Critics argue that the increase disproportionately affects daily travelers, especially those in rural areas and low-income transport operators. Legal challenges are anticipated as public pressure mounts.
Economic Implications for Logistics and Commuting
The revised toll system is expected to impact the transportation and logistics sector, leading to a possible rise in freight costs. Consumers may also feel the effects through price inflation in goods and services due to higher transportation expenses.
Strict Enforcement Begins June 15
From June 15, all toll plazas across motorways and national highways will begin full enforcement of the revised toll structure. Vehicles without valid M-Tags or sufficient balance will be charged the new elevated rates, and may also face additional delays and penalties.
Public Advisory: Register and Recharge M-Tag Accounts
Motorway users are strongly advised to ensure they have an active M-Tag and sufficient balance before travel. NHA has urged all vehicle owners to register promptly to avoid paying surcharges and to benefit from smoother toll processing.
