In light of a recent surge in fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles, legal action has been initiated to address the pressing issue of heavy traffic in Karachi. Barrister Hassan Khan has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court, naming the Chief Secretary, Inspector General of Sindh Police, and the Deputy Inspector General of Traffic as respondents.

The petition highlights a concerning statistic: within the current month, accidents involving dumpers and other heavy vehicles have resulted in the deaths of 74 citizens. In response to this alarming trend, the petitioner urges the court to enforce stricter regulations on heavy traffic, particularly by imposing and adhering to specific operational hours, and ensuring compliance with existing traffic laws.

This legal move underscores the growing public concern over road safety in Karachi. The city’s residents have expressed increasing frustration over the frequent accidents caused by heavy vehicles, leading to calls for immediate and effective action to safeguard commuters.

The Sindh High Court has previously addressed issues related to heavy traffic. In a notable instance, the court directed relevant authorities to implement measures aimed at regulating the movement of heavy vehicles to mitigate traffic congestion and enhance road safety.

The current petition seeks to build upon these efforts, advocating for the strict enforcement of traffic regulations and the establishment of designated hours for heavy vehicle operations. The goal is to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the safety of Karachi’s residents.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the citizens of Karachi remain hopeful that the authorities will take decisive action to address the hazards posed by unregulated heavy traffic and implement sustainable solutions for safer roads.
