Great news for electricity consumers in Pakistan! Power tariffs are expected to drop significantly, bringing much-needed financial relief to households and businesses.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a fuel price adjustment in January, proposing a reduction of up to Rs. 2 per unit. NEPRA is set to review the proposal today, and a final decision will be made after evaluating the financial impact.

Government’s Special Winter Package

To further support consumers, the government has introduced a winter electricity package from December to February. Under this scheme:

  • Residential consumers will pay Rs. 26.07 per unit, allowing savings between Rs. 11.42 and Rs. 26 per unit.
  • Industrial and commercial users will benefit from discounts ranging from Rs. 5.72 to Rs. 22 per unit.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized that this initiative will boost economic growth and increase electricity consumption during the winter months.

Further Reduction Under Consideration

Authorities are also exploring additional measures to lower electricity costs. A proposal is being discussed to cut power tariffs by Rs. 7 to Rs. 8 per unit for three months. However, the final decision depends on approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Power Division and the Ministry of Finance are actively working on finalizing the plan.

What This Means for Pakistan

If approved, these reductions will provide significant relief to consumers, helping both households and businesses manage energy costs more effectively. The move is also expected to enhance economic stability and industrial productivity across the country.
