Heavy Rains Cause Nearly 100 Deaths in India and Nepal
  • At least 64 people died in rain-related incidents in the state of Bihar.
  • Local media reports more than 20 casualties in India’s state of UP.
  • In Nepal, lightning strikes and heavy rain have killed at least eight people.

Recent heavy rainfall across parts of India and Nepal has resulted in the deaths of nearly 100 people since Wednesday, according to officials and media reports. The weather department has warned of continued unseasonal rain in the affected regions.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a multi-hazard warning on Wednesday, highlighting heatwave conditions in western India alongside forecasts for thunderstorms in eastern and central areas.

In the eastern state of Bihar, a senior official from the state’s disaster management department reported to Reuters that at least 64 individuals have died in rain-related incidents since Wednesday.

Local news outlets have indicated that over 20 fatalities occurred in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state.

Neighboring Nepal has also suffered casualties, with the National Disaster Authority reporting that lightning strikes and heavy rain have claimed the lives of at least eight people.

India’s weather office anticipates heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds to persist over central and eastern India until Saturday.

The monsoon season typically commences in June in southern India. In recent years, the summer months have been characterized by severe heatwaves, resulting in numerous deaths.

The IMD announced last week that India is expected to experience a significantly hotter April, with temperatures predicted to be above normal across much of the country.
