Pakistan has called upon the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to fulfill its commitments by implementing resolutions that grant the people of Jammu and Kashmir the right to self-determination through a UN-supervised plebiscite. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Tariq Fatemi, emphasized this during a high-level UNSC debate on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Advancing Adaptability in UN Peace Operations — Responding to New Realities.”
Fatemi highlighted that the Kashmir dispute remains unresolved and underscored the importance of addressing the root causes of conflicts to establish durable peace. He pointed out that Pakistan hosts the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), established in 1949 to monitor the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region.
The minister also reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping operations, noting that the country has deployed 235,000 peacekeepers in 48 missions worldwide. He announced that Islamabad will host the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial preparatory meeting from April 15 to 16, aiming to address challenges confronting UN peacekeeping operations.
The Kashmir issue remains a longstanding point of contention between Pakistan and India, with both nations holding differing positions on the region’s status and governance.
